چکیده

Many thin film heterojunction solar cells contain an interface between the emitter and base which is a very high recombination region and which effectively prevents the passage of minority carriers. However, by utilizing proper design techniques which will be discussed here, the problem can be minimized; efficient thin film heterojunction solar cells can be fabricated, even though they contain high recombination interfaces between the emitter and base regions. Numerical calculations of the performance of CdS/CulnSep cells are used to illustrate the effects of the design considerations presented.

Recent Progress and Critical Issues in Thin Film Polycrystalline Solar Cells and Modules

Thin film CdTe and CuInSe2 based solar cells have reported efficiencies of over 15% and 17% respectively for small area laboratory devices and over 10% for prototype modules. In the present article, an approach to translate laboratory results to the development of large scale module manufacturing facilities is discussed, and critical issues associated with the development of CuInSe2 and CdTe th...

POLYCRYSTALLINE THIN FILM SOLAR CELLS: Present Status and Future Potential

Polycrystalline thin film solar cells based on copper indium diselenide (CuInSe2) and its alloys and cadmium telluride (CdTe) appear to be the most promising candidates for largescale application of photovoltaic energy conversion because they have shown laboratoryefficiencies in excess of 15%. Heterejunction devices with n-type cadmium sulfide (CdS) films show very low minority carrier recombin...

Investigation of Physical Properties of e-Beam Evaporated CdTe Thin Films for Photovoltaic Application

CdTe thin films with 2.8 µm thickness were deposited by electron beam evaporation method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the films. The results of AFM analysis revealed that the CdTe films have uniform surface. CdTe thin films were heat-treated by SnCl2 solution. Structural analysis using XRD s...

Current Status of Polycrystalline Thin-Film PV Technologies

In the past 18 months, thin-film solar cell technologies based on CdTe and CIS have made significant technical progress. Most of the improvements have occurred at the level of solar cells, modules, systems, and reliability testing in both CdTe and CIS. Total-area efficiencies of 14.7% for a thin-film CdTe solar cell deposited on a low-cost, sodalime glass fabricated by Golden Photon, Inc; was v...

Grain-Boundary Physics in Polycrystalline Photovoltaic Materials: Preprint

We use the combination of high-resolution electron microscopy and density-functional theory to study the atomic structure and electronic effects of grain boundaries in polycrystalline photovoltaic materials such as Si, CdTe, CuInSe2, and CuGaSe2. We find that grain boundaries containing dislocation cores create deep levels in Si, CdTe, and CuGaSe2. Surprisingly, however, they do not create deep...
